It’s official: Duke associate coach Nate James hired as Govs head coach

Update, 2 p.m.: Austin Peay State University announced Friday afternoon the hiring of Nate James as the 13th Govs basketball head coach.“I am excited to welcome Nate, Bobbi, Nate III and Dash to Austin Peay and introduce them to the Clarksville community,” Athletics Director Gerald Harrison said in a news release. “Nate is a man of incredible integrity who has been a huge part of one of college basketball’s most successful programs for much of the last two decades. He is committed to the student-athlete experience and the principles of the ‘Total Gov Concept.’

“His depth of experience, his ability to recruit and retain outstanding young men, and his desire to help them excel on and off the court will make him a huge asset to our university and our department. Simply put, Nate James is a champion and a leader. I am proud to say he is the head coach of the Austin Peay Men’s Basketball team.”

“I’m extremely excited and honored to be the 13th head men’s basketball coach at Austin Peay State University,” James said in the release. “To have the opportunity to lead my own program, be part of the amazing vision for a place like APSU and serve a community that embraces its university and student-athletes has been a dream of mine for quite some time. It is exactly what every coach wishes for.

“I will work endlessly to build a basketball culture with the type of culture that every player, alum, donor and fan will always be proud of. This is an amazing day to be a Gov! Let’s Go Peay!”

There will be a formal welcoming event at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, in the Dunn Center.

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The associate head coach for Duke University basketball, Nate James, has been hired as head coach for Austin Peay State University, according to national media reports.

247Sports.com is reporting that James will take over the role, vacated with the recent resignation of Govs coach Matt Figger.

Harrison could not be immediately reached for comment.

About Nate James

James, 43, has been a member of the coaching staff at Duke for nine years.

According to his profile on GoDuke.com, James started as strength and conditioning coach and had a series of promotions leading up to associate head coach following the 2017-18 season.

The Washington, D.C., native had a hand in three of Duke’s five national championships, one as a player in 2001 and as assistant coach in 2010 and 2015. Over nine seasons, James helped the Blue Devils to a 240-58 record with five ACC Tournament championships. Duke has been a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament four times in James’ nine seasons as assistant coach, according to GoDuke.com.

James graduated from Duke in 2001 with a degree in sociology. He and his wife, actress Bobbi Baker James, have two sons.
